Onions can lower your risk of cancer - Dietician


Yes, I know they make you cry,  but onions have more important benefits than just being an ingredient and a tearful vegetable.

According to Dr. Tunde Ajobo a dietician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan "consuming onions may lower the risk of several diseases, especially stomach cancer and colorectal.

Dr. Tunde Ajobo who is also HOD of Dietetics, stated that onions are a good source of Vitamin C and antioxidant (against toxins) that help to reduce the formation of free radicals which are known to cause cancer.

Further stressing his point, he said that onions are part of the alliums family of vegetables and herbs like garlic, scallions, leeks and chives. These vegetables have been cultivated for centuries for medical properties and also their pungent flavours.

Now, you might not know this but Onions comes in different shapes, sizes, flavour and colours and the most common colours are yellow, white and red onions.The flavours can vary from juicy and sweet with a mild flavour to a spicy, pungent and sharp flavour depending on the season in which they are grown and eaten.Onions are low in calories and are high in beneficial nutrients like minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. 

An estimated 105 billion pounds of onions are harvested world-wide each year with a quarter of that figure grown in Africa. 

According to him the health benefits of consuming this tearful vegetable include lowering your risks of several cancers, improving your mood and maintaining the health of your hair and skin. He went on to list the benefits and contents of an onion, he said "it contains fibre, sugar, protein and vitamins and also contain small amounts of iron, calcium, magnesium, folate, potassium and phosphorus and antioxidants like sulphur and quercetin.

Although the exact way in which the organosulfur compounds in the onion inhibit cancer is yet unknown, several studies have proven that the consumption of the vegetable can help lower the risk of colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, colon and stomach cancer.

Although consuming a lot of onions daily can cause you health. its better to eat it with a variety of foods.
