Cut your Onion without Tears

Onions, that little vegetable that may make a man in the kitchen cry. Have you ever wondered why onions like your tears so much? Well, releasing tears is not a bad thing at all, but when it comes to the case of onions they sure make the eyes burn as well.

So before we rush down to remedies lets first know how onions make us cry.

This is the shortest definition of the process.
Onions produce a chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide when you cut through them. This irritant stimulates the lachrymal glands in the eyes so they secrete tears.

This is the long definition in case you don't you got confused reading the first.
When you cut open an onion, you are actually cutting through microscopic cells which contains enzymes these enzymes transform into volatile gases as they leave the cells. A chemical reaction occurs and creates a lchrymatory agent, When this volatile gases reaches the glands in the corner of your eyes, your eyes retaliate by producing tears in an attempt to flush away the chemical.

So here is how to Cut our Onions without Tears

Note: These procedures were stated by a dependable source, so you can go ahead and try it.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the onion— this way you will release less enzymes into the air.
  • Cut onions in cold water.
  • Cut the onion near a cloud of steam or near hot running water.
  • Cut the root last—it contains a higher concentration of enzymes.
  • Chill or freeze onions to minimize the amount of volatile gas released into the air.
  • Cut the onion next to a fan, or window.
  • Light a match before you peel or slice the onion. The sulfur disables the compounds in onions that make your eyes water.
